Ludwig Stein, born March 20, 1938, passed away suddenly in Mexico on January 13, 2015. Ludwig was an only child who was estranged from his parents. He was talented as a child and maintained his great originality and creativity through a long career as an artist. After high school he joined the army and was a paratrooper in the 87th Airborne Division. He was deployed to Korea.
He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Honors in 1965 from Kutztown State College where by all reports he had plentiful and colorful curricular and extracurricular experiences. He completed his training in fine art earning an MFA with Honors in 1969 from the renowned Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He went on to teach at California State College at Northridge, the University of Wisconsin and the Tyler School of Art. In 1972 he came to Syracuse as a faculty member of the College of Visual and Performing Arts of Syracuse University where he taught undergraduate and graduate painting, and administered numerous programs. He was active in the Syracuse Arts Programs abroad working for several years in London, England and Florence, Italy. He taught drawing, painting, figure drawing, art seminars, spatial systems, curatorship and gallery management. He rose through the academic ranks at Syracuse University, and when he retired in 2014 was Professor of Art in the Department of Art. He served the University at various times as Department Chair of Foundation, Director of Graduate Painting and as Chairman of the Department of Art. He was a prolific and dedicated artist showing his work in galleries throughout the United States and Europe. His creative drive never stopped and he was happiest when making art which he continued nearly daily until the time of his death.
